The day Jules Verne published his first novel – level 2

Five Weeks in a Balloon is a book by Jules Verne. It was published on 31 January 1863.

The book tells the story of three British men. They went on a journey across Africa in a balloon. Their journey started in Zanzibar on the east coast and ended in Senegal on the west coast.

The book was full of adventures which happened during the journey across the continent.

In the book, Verne also cleverly mixed real and fictional technologies to create a very interesting story.

The novel was well received by both critics and the public.

Difficult words: coast (a place between the land and the sea), fictional (not real), adventure (an exciting and dangerous experience).

What element of Jules Verne's writing style do you think appealed to the public and critics when Five Weeks in a Balloon was released?
