The day Stanislav Petrov saved the world from the apocalypse – level 1

26-09-1983

Stanislav Petrov saves the world in 1983.

On September 26, 1983, Stanislav Petrov is looking at the Soviet satellite system. At one moment, the satellite system shows five rockets which are coming from the United States.

It is a difficult situation for Petrov. He must decide what to do. He thinks that there are no rockets. He thinks that it is a false alarm.

He doesn’t tell his boss that the rockets are coming. He tells his boss that it is a mistake in the system.

If he says that the rockets are coming, a war between the US and the Soviet Union can start. His good thinking saves the world from a big war.

Difficult words: difficult (not easy), decide (to say what to do), false (not correct).

How did Stanislav Petrov's decision to disregard the satellite system's warning potentially save the world from a nuclear war between the US and Soviet Union in 1983?
