The day of the Miracle on the Hudson – level 3

15-02-2009

On January 15, 2009, the Airbus A320 took off from an airport in New York.

Minutes after taking off, the plane encountered a flock of geese that resulted in a catastrophic loss of power in both engines as the geese went into them.

The pilots quickly assessed the situation and realized that returning to the airport was not possible. Instead, they decided to land the Airbus A320 on the Hudson River.

The pilots managed a controlled water landing, allowing all 155 passengers and crew members to evacuate safely.

This event became known as the Miracle on the Hudson.

Difficult words: encounter (to meet), flock (a group of birds), geese (a big bird similar to a duck).

What were the immediate actions taken by both the pilots and the passengers after the plane landed in the Hudson River?
