The day of the Miracle on the Hudson – level 1

15-02-2009

It is January 15, 2009. A big plane takes off from New York. Soon after the start, big birds hit the plane. The birds go into the engines of the plane. The engines stop.

It is a big problem. The pilots must do something fast. They understand that it is not possible to go back to the airport. They must land on the Hudson River.

The landing is successful. All 155 people on the plane are safe.

Difficult words: take off (to go from the ground into the air), engine (the part of a plane which produces power), land (to fly safely to the ground).

What key decisions did the pilots make to ensure the successful landing on the Hudson River?
