The day of the first atomic bomb explosion – level 3

16-07-1945

On July 16, 1945, the United States successfully conducted the first test explosion of an atomic bomb in New Mexico.

The creation of the bomb was a top-secret government project aimed at creating a nuclear weapon before the enemy did during World War II.

The blast created a mushroom cloud that rose to a height of over 12 km and a blast wave that was felt over 160 km away.

The success of the test paved the way for the use of atomic bombs against Japan in August of that year.

Difficult words: conduct (to do), blast (an explosion), pave the way for (to make something possible).

What were the immediate and long-term impacts of the test explosion of the atomic bomb in New Mexico?
