The day Wikipedia started – level 3

Wikipedia is a free, online encyclopedia that has become one of the most popular reference websites on the internet.

The website officially launched on January 15, 2001.

The concept behind Wikipedia was to create a platform where people could collaboratively create and edit articles, with the aim of providing accurate and reliable information to the world.

The name “Wikipedia” comes from the combination of the words “wiki”, which means quick in Hawaiian, and “encyclopedia”.

On its first day, Wikipedia had just a few articles, but it quickly grew in popularity and content. By the end of its first year, it had over 20,000 articles in multiple languages.

Difficult words: reference (information about something), content (information on a website), multiple (many).

What do you think is the key to Wikipedia’s success in becoming one of the most popular reference websites on the internet?
