The day of the first 911 call – level 2

16-02-1968

On February 16, 1968, the first 911 call in the United States was made in Alabama. The 911 system brought a big change. Before the 911 system was introduced, people had to call the local emergency services directly. Each police, fire, or ambulance department had its phone number. People had to know these numbers if they were in an emergency. Sometimes it took too much time to call for help.

The 911 system made it easier for people to reach emergency services quickly. It gradually became the standard across the United States. It saved a lot of lives and property.

Difficult words: emergency (a dangerous situation which must be handled quickly), gradually (step by step).

What other improvements to emergency response systems have been made since the introduction of 911 in 1968?
