The day of the Costa Concordia disaster – level 3

13-01-2012

Costa Concordia was a luxury cruise ship. On January 13, 2012, the ship was sailing near the coast of Italy.

The ship changed its planned direction to greet people on one island. This maneuver led the ship to collide with a submerged rock formation.

The collision tore a 35-meter-long hole in the ship. As seawater flooded the engine rooms, the ship lost power and began to lean to one side. Then it partially sank near the coast.

The evacuation process was delayed by multiple factors, including a delayed call for help, confusion among the crew, and lifeboats made unusable due to the ship’s extreme leaning to one side. It took about six hours to evacuate the passengers and crew.

The world witnessed one of the worst sea disasters of the 21st century as 32 people died during the accident and many were injured.

Difficult words: cruise (a holiday on a big ship), submerged (hidden underwater), lean (to move to one side).

What were the steps taken to ensure passenger and crew safety during the evacuation process?
