The day Machu Picchu was discovered – level 3
Around 1450, the Incas built a city high in the Peruvian Andes on a beautiful mountain ridge at an altitude of 2400 meters. About 750 people lived there. However, after about 100 years, the city was abandoned and remained hidden for many years.
In 1908, the American traveler Hiram Bingham visited Peru. There he discovered the remains of an ancient Inca civilization that captivated him. He returned to Peru in 1911. A local farmer told him about an old city in the mountains.
The next day, on July 24, 1911, the farmer took Bingham up high into the mountains.
At the end of a long journey up, an amazing view appeared in front of Bingham. There were remains of the ancient Inca city. The place was named Machu Picchu.
Difficult words: ridge (a long area at the top of a mountain), altitude (the height above the sea), abandoned (left) remain (to stay), remains (the parts that are left), ancient (very old), captivate (to hold somebody’s attention strongly).
What was the name of the city discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911?
